how do you prepare a child with an Autism spectrum Disorder? The Anser You cannot always do this for some children with Autism any change is hard, but sometimes you can prepare them for christmas it just depends on the individual. For us it is easy as paul Loves Christmas and anything to do with Santa or Christmas itself. but for some it can be hard as they may not understand why you put up a tree or why they are not allowed to open presents until christmas. but one way you can help them get ready for it Mentally is to talk about it. Talk about how one day a year there is a special day called Christmas that is about giving others presents, being thoughtful of others needs. Now having to deal with some of these changes may bring on some behavioural issues example today while in the car my son wanted to go to walmart and go shopping well then My husband got a call from work saying he was needed to go to work so we had to come home. This was very hard because paul wanted to go shopping he did not understand why we could not go and why he had to wait to go shopping on another day. with the Christmas tree I know with our family either myself or Mike put up the tree but its up to the kids to put all the ordiments on it. That is one way to make putting up the tree fun for all it also might help to explain in a kid friendly way the story of CHristmas by either using some of the programming of ABC Family at christmas time or by using a posterboard of pictures that you may already use in day to day with your child. now some of these examples may not work and you may find yourself developing your set of things that work for you and your family in helping your child with Autism understand whatChristmas is all about. see on the outside a child with Autism is just like any other child its what's on the inside that's just a little bit different that you or me. they do not understand the world the way you and I do so we have to help them and guide them though it and give them all the love that you can because as we all know at this time of year every child deserves Extra special love.
